National Day fireworks

Tonight we decided to hang out with 500,000 or so of our closest friends and watch the National Day fireworks display at a stadium near our apartment.  Special thanks to Sac (Libby's advisor) and his his son Vu for hosting us!

Despite the rain, the sea of humanity going to these fireworks was truly impressive.  The pictures can't convey how difficult it was to get anywhere near the stadium or even move around.  And when the fireworks were over, everyone -- cars, motorbikes, walkers -- turned around and started moving in a wet, hot, chaotic mass.  Living in a small town in America means we don't often have experiences like this, and we often avoid them when presented.  But there was something exhilarating about celebrating independence day with so many Vietnamese people.

And the fireworks themselves were great.  They lasted about fifteen minutes, and it was a non-stop grand finale of fireworks in that whole amount of time.  Better yet was listening to the crowd ooh and ahhh and scream every time they saw something they liked.  And of course, watching little Vu react reminded us why we were there in the first place:
