Mid-Autumn Festival

Every year around this time in Vietnam, there appear a bunch of stands selling moon cakes, similar to this one:



We had no idea what they were or why they were being sold, although we did buy one of the cakes on the first few days we were here (it wasn't bad).  It turns out that the Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated every year in September and it happens in China and Vietnam among other places in Asia.  As far as we can tell, the festival here in Vietnam is a combination of a harvest festival and a children's festival.

It feels like preparations have been happening for the big day (Sept. 27) for awhile.  Earlier this week, we looked outside and noticed a big set up happening in the park near our house.  The sign says it is part of the Full Moon Festival 2015,


So we wandered out and saw an amazing event as part of the Mid Autumn Festival. In our neighborhood, several street comes together and puts on a display of fruits, similar to what you might see at a county fair in the United States -- except these were a little more elaborate.










And then the program started, which had a lot of singing, dancing, a dragon, and even some fire juggling.  The park was hopping:
